Chris Evans Says Marvel Pitched Him a Nomad Movie — and He Said No for Eight Years

It took a dozen pitches and a rumor about Robert Downey Jr. to bring Steve Rogers back.

The story of how Chris Evans returned to the MCU begins with a dinner and a no.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Evans said that shortly after Avengers: Endgame wrapped in 2018, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios co-president Lou D’Esposito took him to dinner with a proposal: keep making movies with Steve Rogers — as Nomad.

“They were like, we’d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,” Evans said. “And I said, okay, well, what do you got? And they showed me a pitch, and it was a great pitch. For whatever reason, it just didn’t feel right at the time. I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it, but I just said, please keep pitching.”

They did. “Over the course of, you know, eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches, and they were all wonderful,” he said. “It just never quite felt right. And you do start thinking it’s not right because it’s just not right.”

What broke the pattern wasn’t a pitch at all.

“Then I got a phone call from my team saying there’s a rumor — Downey is talking to Marvel,” Evans said. “And I was like, uh-oh. What does this mean? All of a sudden, it felt right.”

The Nomad of it all. For readers who haven’t followed the comics thread: Nomad is the identity Steve Rogers takes in Captain America #180, published in 1974, after the Secret Empire storyline leaves him disillusioned with the government he’d represented. He abandons the shield and the flag, operating as “the Man Without a Country,” before eventually returning to the mantle. It’s among the sharpest political storytelling in the character’s history — and, apparently, a story Marvel spent nearly a decade trying to put on screen.

The timing is its own small joke. Earlier this week, Anthony Mackie told fans debating Captain America continuity to go read the comics, pointing specifically at Steve becoming Nomad [link to our Mackie piece]. It turns out the studio had been circling that exact arc since 2018.

Evans returns as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18, 2026, where Hayley Atwell also returns as Peggy Carter.
