Chris Evans Says Marvel Pitched Him a Nomad Movie — and He Said No for Eight Years

It took roughly a dozen pitches — and Robert Downey Jr.’s return — before Evans was ready to bring Steve Rogers back.

Marvel apparently spent the better part of a decade trying to make a Chris Evans Nomad movie happen.

And the surprising part isn’t that Evans kept saying no. It’s that Marvel kept asking.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con, Evans revealed that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios co-president Lou D’Esposito began talking to him about continuing Steve Rogers’ story shortly after Avengers: Endgame wrapped in 2018. The idea on the table? Steve Rogers as Nomad.

Marvel Kept Pitching Chris Evans a Nomad Movie

Evans said Marvel came to that first dinner with an actual pitch ready to go.

He liked it. He just didn’t want to do it.

After spending nearly a decade as Steve Rogers, Evans was protective of the ending the character received in Endgame. Rather than immediately jumping into another movie, he told Marvel to keep bringing him ideas.

They took him very literally.

Over the next eight years, Evans estimates he heard at least a dozen pitches for a potential return. According to the actor, the problem wasn’t that those ideas were bad. None of them felt like enough of a reason to reopen a story he thought Marvel had already finished well.

That distinction matters.

This wasn’t an actor spending eight years refusing to play Captain America again. Evans was listening. Marvel was pitching. The door was apparently cracked open the entire time.

They just couldn’t find the story that made him want to walk back through it.

Why Robert Downey Jr.’s Return Changed Everything

Eventually, the thing that changed Evans’ mind wasn’t another Nomad pitch.

It was Robert Downey Jr.

Evans said his team called him after hearing that Downey was talking to Marvel again. That immediately got his attention. Then Avengers: Doomsday co-director Joe Russo gave Evans the pitch for what Marvel was building.

This time, it clicked.

There’s something wonderfully full-circle about that.

Downey famously helped convince Evans to accept Captain America in the first place. Years later, the possibility of having him back in the MCU helped convince Evans that Steve Rogers might have another chapter worth telling.

Of course, Downey isn’t returning as Tony Stark this time. He’s coming back as Victor von Doom, which makes whatever convinced Evans to sign onto Doomsday considerably more interesting.

The Comics History Behind Steve Rogers’ Nomad Identity

Marvel spending years circling Nomad isn’t a random choice.

Steve Rogers first adopts the identity in 1974’s Captain America #180, following the Secret Empire storyline. Disillusioned with the institution he had represented as Captain America, Steve abandons the shield and becomes Nomad — a hero deliberately operating as a “man without a country.”

The identity doesn’t last forever, but the story represents one of the clearest examples of separating Steve Rogers the person from Captain America the symbol.

That distinction matters even more now that Sam Wilson is Captain America in the MCU.

Anthony Mackie has already pointed fans back toward the comics when discussing Steve’s history beyond the shield, specifically invoking the period when Steve became Nomad.

And now we know Marvel itself had been considering that same corner of Steve Rogers’ history since Endgame.

Does This Mean Chris Evans Is Nomad in Avengers: Doomsday?

Not necessarily.

The revelation confirms that Marvel repeatedly explored continuing Steve Rogers’ story as Nomad. It does not confirm that Evans will use the Nomad identity in Avengers: Doomsday.

What Evans has confirmed is that he is returning as Steve Rogers — and that the combination of Downey’s return and Joe Russo’s Doomsday pitch finally gave him a story that felt worth coming back for.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind as speculation around Steve’s role continues.

Endgame left him having passed the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson and apparently living out the life he never got to have with Peggy Carter. Doomsday now has to answer the much bigger question:

What could possibly make that Steve Rogers come back?

Whatever the answer is, Marvel apparently spent eight years looking for it.
