HBO’s Harry Potter has a new Gilderoy Lockhart. Kit Harington is stepping into the role for Season 2, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who has exited the production.
The recasting is confirmed across Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap, all reporting the news within the same news cycle.
Hoult’s exit comes down to scheduling
Hoult departed the adaptation because of scheduling conflicts, including his commitment to reprise Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. Season 2, which adapts Chamber of Secrets, is set to begin production this fall ahead of a Christmas Day 2026 premiere.
Harington has already played Lockhart — in audio
Harington isn’t coming to the character cold. He previously voiced Lockhart in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions’ release of Chamber of Secrets, giving him a run at the character before stepping in front of a camera for it.
