Driving Rogue Review: A High-Speed Roguelike Racer You Won’t Put Down

Driving Rogue is a high-speed roguelike arcade racer with a deck-building twist. Our hands-on review after 20 hours and every achievement unlocked.

Driving Rogue is a high-speed, roguelike arcade racer that hits with a wave of déjà vu — the kind that drops you straight back into the racing games of your childhood. It is also, hands down, one of my favorite roguelikes I have played all year, if not ever.

What makes Driving Rogue so addictive

I am a huge car guy, and I love arcade-style racers that let you get a little silly with the controls. Driving Rogue nails that feeling. Better yet, it layers a deck-building system on top of the chaos.

That deck-building hook is where the game really opens up. It lets you experiment with wildly different builds, and you will want to. Each car feels distinct and comes with its own base perk set, so no two runs play the same.

Then there is the flow state. Stringing together back-to-back near misses, drifting between cars, and holding max speed produces a rush I still have trouble putting into words. Crucially, the game rewards risk. The harder you push, the more it gives back.

A hit of pure racing nostalgia

The music and the gameplay both pull from a very specific era. To me, they land somewhere between the rally courses of Gran Turismo 2 and the neon street racing of Midnight Club 3. As a result, every run feels fresh and comfortingly familiar at the same time.

That blend is a big part of the appeal. It scratches a nostalgic itch while still feeling modern and unpredictable. Honestly, I just cannot get enough of it.

Is Driving Rogue worth playing?

For me, the answer is an easy yes. I have already sunk around 20 hours into Driving Rogue and enjoyed every second, even completing every achievement. That kind of pull is rare for me.

Ultimately, it has earned a spot in my top 10 games of the year. If you love arcade racers with a real risk-reward edge and a clever deck-building twist, this one is an absolute blast. Driving Rogue is just rad all around.
