#SaveMassEffect Petition Tops 200,000 Signatures as Both Shepard Actors Back It

A fan petition asking EA to keep Mass Effect going has passed 200,000 signatures less than a week after BioWare’s closure was announced. The Change.org page, titled “#SaveMassEffect,” showed more than 210,000 signatures when The Nerd Wire checked on Monday.

The petition asks EA to do one of two things: commit to continued Mass Effect development with dedicated funding, enough staff and time to keep the series’ quality, or license the franchise to another studio that wants to carry it on. The page lists a user named Joe Smith as its starter.

Both voices of Commander Shepard have publicly backed the effort. According to GamesRadar, Jennifer Hale said she would like to imagine fan funding, a studio and investors working together to restore the series, while Mark Meer urged fans to “hold the line” and sign. GamesBeat and Beebom report both actors have shown support through social posts.

EA has not publicly responded to the petition in any coverage we reviewed. As The Nerd Wire reported Sunday, EA confirmed in a staff letter that BioWare is closing and that early development on the next Mass Effect has ended. EA has not said what happens to the Mass Effect or Dragon Age franchises, and a petition carries no obligation for the publisher.

What to watch: whether EA addresses the franchise’s future at its planned November town hall, and whether the signature count keeps climbing.
