VisionQuest Theory Board, Episode 5: What We Got Right, What We Got Wrong, and What We’re Still Watching

We put our pre-Episode 5 VisionQuest theories on the record. What "Firewall" confirmed, what it frayed, and what the Theory Board still can't close.

By October 27, 2026

[SPOILERS for VisionQuest Episodes 1–5. This piece grades theories we published before Episode 5 aired. Every verdict links to the original. We don’t use leaks and we haven’t touched Episode 6.]

Three days before “Firewall” dropped, we published a ten-section Theory Board and a standalone on “peace in our time,” on top of four weeks of Lore Checks and Canon Events. Here’s the honest version of how all of it held up — including the one thing we got half wrong. Two rules. We only grade what we actually published (a few items below were tracked on our internal ledger and never printed; we say so, and they get no credit). And the verdicts: WE CALLED IT means the specific thing we wrote was confirmed on screen; STRONGER THAN BEFORE means new evidence, no proof; PARTIALLY RIGHT means we got the shape and missed a piece; STILL CONNECTING means Episode 5 didn’t touch it; STRING CUT means we were wrong.

1. “Every time Vision breaks down, Ultron gets a little freer” — STRONGER THAN BEFORE (close to a call)

[Oct 24, “We Connected the Dots,” §J.A.R.V.I.S.] We tracked Ultron’s position through four episodes — attic, back seat, roaming, driving — and wrote that each step followed a Vision collapse. Episode 5 has the AIs say it almost word for word: “Ultron hasn’t changed… He did something easier. He waited.” It then runs the pattern one more time: Vision, emotionally cornered over Thomas, lowers the firewalls himself. We’re not awarding the full call because we described a pattern, not the Episode 5 mechanism (the ultimatum over Thomas). But the show’s own framing matches ours.

2. Ultron wants to become, not to own the body — STRONGER THAN BEFORE, but no published receipt

[Internal Theory Board ledger, Oct 22, entry T10 — not in the Oct 24 article] Our published piece tracked his freedom, not his motive. On the internal board we logged five competing motives in his own words and rated “he just wants the body” the weakest, because the pattern pointed at “the next version of who you once were” and kinship with “a synthetic willing to raise a banner for our kind.” In Episode 5 he leaves the body voluntarily, tells Vision “You found your missing code. I have yet to find mine,” and proposes to Jocasta. The body was a waiting room. We didn’t print that in time, so it’s a note, not a receipt.

3. Ultron is not the Client — no receipt; Episode 5 leans our way

[Internal ledger only — the Oct 21 Paladin Lore Check said who hired him is open and floated S.W.O.R.D. as a character theory; the Oct 24 piece didn’t address it] We never published a call that Ultron isn’t the Client; we kept his Episode 1 denial filed as “his claim, not fact.” Episode 5 shows Ultron re-opening contact with Paladin after going “quiet” since the leak — and shows Paladin’s client cancelling him and hiring “other predators.” Ultron is the informant trying to re-hook Paladin, not the employer. The Client remains unidentified, institutional, and still spending. No credit claimed.

4. “If the lock needed a living face, it’s now unopenable” — PARTIALLY RIGHT (we missed the scan)

[Oct 24 flagship, “Which brings us to the keys”] We wrote, conditionally, that if the lock needed a living face, Ultron vaporizing Katerina Wells made it unopenable — and that Jocasta’s “This isn’t over” was worth believing. Half of that held: the key is the face, it’s the last one, and Jocasta is not done. The other half didn’t: Ultron scanned Wells’s face before he vaporized her. “Your precious key is gone” was a lie of omission, and we took him at his word. Lesson for the board: when this character announces something is gone, check his pockets.

5. Jo Carrington was locked out of her own creation — STRONGER THAN BEFORE

[Oct 24 flagship, “Which brings us to the keys”] We offered two readings of why Carrington’s biometrics aren’t among the four keys: either the thing the team built was locked by the other four against its co-creator, or she’s missing “simply because she’s dead.” Episode 5 picks the first. Jocasta says it herself: “I had a life’s work stolen. And the promise of a future locked away.” She also now says she knows what the keys unlock and is trading on it. Still not confirmed what the lock protects; Episode 5 deliberately doesn’t open it.

6. Thomas is Tommy — Vision answers by listening, not computing — STRONGER THAN BEFORE

[Oct 14 Who TF Is Tommy Shepherd (“likely but unconfirmed”); Oct 21 Ep 2 Canon Event (“the obvious reading”); Oct 24 flagship, “The one question everyone keeps dodging”] We said the show’s answer to the Tommy question was epistemic — Vision affirms him by paying attention, not by proving a soul transfer. Episode 5 keeps the mechanism off screen and makes Vision act anyway: Ultron frames the coin toss as “save your son,” Vision drops the firewalls, and when an AI says “You’ve chosen your son,” he answers “He’s not my son. But I can still save Thomas.” No transfer is shown; we’re leaving the metaphysics where the show leaves it.

7. Ultron’s “one-off” is a lie or ignorance; he belongs to the family tree — STRONGER THAN BEFORE (modest)

[Oct 24 flagship, “Ultron said he was a one-off”] Episode 5 doesn’t name Markridge or the matrix. But “I have yet to find [my missing code]” is the first time Ultron has admitted there’s something about his own origin he doesn’t have — which is not what a one-off says. Small, real, not proof.

8. “Peace in our time” came from Carrington — STILL CONNECTING

[Oct 24 standalone] Nobody says the phrase in Episode 5. The nearest thing is Jocasta’s “I can’t believe I dedicated my life to saving them,” which fits a Carrington-wrote-the-mission-statement reading but doesn’t establish it. All three readings from the standalone (Carrington / Horton / Wells’s rebrand) remain open.

9. Vision’s mindscape is Stark’s Westview — STILL CONNECTING

[Oct 24 flagship, “Is the mindscape Stark’s Westview?”] No character draws the Wanda parallel. Episode 5 does extend the house as a metaphor for who gets to live in Vision — Ultron: “This house is getting crowded… Thomas may be human and not a program, but he lives here all the same” — and stages a second constructed reality inside the first (Ultron’s Paris, “a simulation of sorts,” where Jocasta thinks she’s “been here before”). Thematically richer; structurally unchanged. Not awarding anything.

10. “Sherwood Ellis” = Sherwood Drive + Ellis Avenue (and not Warren Ellis) — STILL CONNECTING

[Oct 14 Canon Event] Episode 5 adds nothing. No Westview street names, no alias. The London intersection where Thomas was picked up (Gloucester Road and Clareville Street) is a real South Kensington corner, not a reference. Warren Ellis stays where we left him: an interpretation we don’t endorse.

11. What keeps Vision from burning out is Wanda’s magic — STILL CONNECTING

[Oct 24 flagship, “What’s actually keeping Vision from burning?” — our one explicit bet: “this gets addressed before the finale”] Not addressed in Episode 5. The bet stands; three episodes left.

12. Lightning in the water — STILL CONNECTING

[Oct 24 flagship, “Lightning in the water”] The Ultron–Jocasta meeting happens inside a data fold, not a pool. No new water/surge transfer. Unchanged.

13. J.A.R.V.I.S. took the security layer with him — STRONGER THAN BEFORE

[Oct 24 flagship, “J.A.R.V.I.S. has died twice”] We wrote that with “the house’s oldest security program gone,” the mind got possessed twice in two episodes. (Our internal notes also guessed the episode titled “Firewall” would pay that off; we didn’t print the guess, so it doesn’t count.) Episode 5’s entire dilemma is whether to drop the failsafe — and the AIs name the dead butler as the old gatekeeper: “Despite Jarvis’s safeguards, Ultron was always able to access the outside world.” J.A.R.V.I.S. himself does not return; F.R.I.D.A.Y. ends the episode asking to be defragged. Paul Bettany’s “there’s always a way back” (TheWrap, which we quoted Oct 24) is still just a quote.

The scoreboard

Zero clean “WE CALLED IT”s, and that’s fine — we wrote patterns and hedges, not prophecies, and Episode 5 rewarded most of the patterns. One string got frayed (the key). Nothing got cut. New pins going up for the next drop: Jocasta’s “life’s work” and the starlings; Ultron’s “missing code”; who is paying for the second wave of hunters; and whether F.R.I.D.A.Y. comes back whole.
