Ubisoft Confirms a New Ghost Recon Is in Development — Here’s What We Know

Ghost Recon is coming back. Ubisoft used the 25th anniversary of the tactical-shooter franchise to confirm that a new mainline Ghost Recon is in development — the series’ first new mainline entry since Ghost Recon: Breakpoint launched in 2019.

For a franchise that’s been quiet for years, it’s a genuine “it’s happening” moment. Just temper the excitement a little: this is a confirmation, not a reveal. Ubisoft announced the new Ghost Recon during a dedicated showcase on Aug. 6, and pointedly kept the details to a minimum.

What Ubisoft actually announced

Here’s the reality check. Ubisoft revealed the new Ghost Recon with no title, no release window, and no gameplay footage — the reveal was illustrated only with behind-the-scenes motion-capture footage. In other words, the project exists and it’s official, but we’re early.

What the studio did share was intent. Live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa said the team wants to “deliver a fun, fresh experience that stays true to everything that defines Ghost Recon: tactical action, large scale operations, credible military storytelling, and of course, the Ghost Unit.” So the pillars fans know are staying — this isn’t a wholesale reinvention.

The Ghost Recon Insider Program

The most actionable part of the announcement: Ubisoft opened a Ghost Recon Insider Program. Enrolled players get access to early closed playtests as the game develops — the “put it to the test” element the studio teased. If you’re a longtime Ghost Recon fan, that’s your way in early, and a sign Ubisoft wants community feedback baked into development.

Why it matters

Ghost Recon has been dormant since 2019, and the tactical-shooter space has been waiting for the series to return in a meaningful way. Confirming a new mainline entry — with the franchise’s core identity intact and a community-testing program attached — is the clearest signal yet that Ubisoft is serious about the comeback.

For now, that’s the whole picture: a new Ghost Recon is real, it’s early, and there’s a way for fans to get involved. Expect the actual reveal — title, setting, gameplay — to come later.
