The Stranger is Gandalf

Daniel Weyman has effectively ended three seasons of ambiguity. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con — in comments The Nerd Wire recorded — he described where the character stands in Season 3:

“He has arrived in season three. He’s in his power. He has agency. He’s the Gandalf I think we all hopefully know and love.”

Weyman also revealed what the gap between seasons looked like: an extended stay with Tom Bombadil, and a philosophy built on “soft power, touching people’s hearts” rather than spectacle.

Simon Pegg is the Balrog

In the Season 3 trailer revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, Prime Video confirmed one of its boldest choices yet: Simon Pegg is voicing the Balrog — the fire-and-shadow demon, reportedly speaking for the first time, tied to Sauron’s forging of the One Ring. Jamie Campbell Bower is Celeborn

The Stranger Things actor joins Season 3 as Celeborn — Galadriel’s husband, absent since Season 1 and presumed lost to the war. Bower describes him as a “lover-boy,” with a dynamic drawn partly from Tolkien’s own marriage to his wife Edith. He’ll also take a leadership role in the War of the Elves and Sauron.

The Nine arrive — as the “Nazgnagôl”

Season 3 introduces the future Ringwraiths before their fall, as still-mortal ring-bearers mid-corruption. The showrunners coined the term Nazgnagôl — “Ring-servants” — built from Tolkien’s own linguistic components, though the word appears nowhere in his writing.

Zubin Varla plays Khamûl the Easterling, positioned in Rhûn opposite Ciarán Hinds’ Dark Wizard. The show’s stated approach: every one of the Nine is the hero of his own story.
