Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom takes center stage in the new Avengers: Doomsday footage, as Marvel finally begins revealing why Victor Von Doom is coming for the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men.
Marvel Studios just gave us our best look yet at the end of the Multiverse Saga.
A new Avengers: Doomsday trailer debuted Friday night during D23, bringing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom back into the spotlight while offering a much clearer picture of the conflict waiting for the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men.
And this time, Doom isn’t simply standing around looking intimidating.
He’s going to war.
Doctor Doom Has Lost Everything
The new footage puts Victor Von Doom firmly at the center of the story, opening the door to something Marvel has largely kept hidden until now: why Doom is doing any of this.
Sue Storm describes Victor as someone who was once different — brilliant, complicated and, apparently, deeply connected to the Fantastic Four before whatever happened to him.
The footage repeatedly returns to the idea of family and loss, including Doom looking toward a portrait depicting what appears to be a wife and child.
Whatever happened to them seems to have broken Victor.
And Reed Richards knows him well enough to understand exactly what that means.
One of the trailer’s most significant moments comes as an emotional Reed confronts Doom, demanding answers from him. Rather than introducing Victor as some distant multiversal villain the Fantastic Four have never encountered, Doomsday appears to be establishing a much more personal history between Doom and Marvel’s First Family.
That could make the conflict considerably messier.
Doom Is Bringing Sentinels
Then there are the Sentinels.
One of the trailer’s biggest images puts Doom in front of enormous Sentinels, directly connecting his campaign to the mutant side of the story.
The machines have historically been created to hunt mutants, and their presence helps explain why the returning X-Men aren’t simply another group of heroes being pulled into the multiversal chaos.
They’re targets.
With the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men all occupying different corners of Doomsday, the Sentinels give Marvel a way to turn those separate worlds into parts of the same war.
And Doom appears to be standing at the center of it.
Three Marvel Worlds Are About to Collide
The sheer number of characters appearing in Avengers: Doomsday has been one of the biggest questions surrounding the movie.
This trailer begins showing how Marvel intends to bring them together.
The Avengers and New Avengers are joined by the Fantastic Four, while the Fox-era X-Men are pulled into the conflict as the multiversal threat grows.
Thor, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, Shang-Chi, Shuri, Loki, Yelena Belova and other MCU heroes appear alongside characters including Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Cyclops, Magneto and Gambit.
It isn’t just an Avengers movie anymore.
It’s a collision between generations of Marvel movies.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom Is Not Tony Stark
Ever since Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, one enormous question has followed the casting:
Why does Doctor Doom look like Tony Stark?
The new trailer still isn’t answering that.
But it is increasingly making something else clear.
Marvel is treating him as Victor Von Doom.
The emphasis on Victor’s family, his apparent past with Reed and Sue and the tragedy that seemingly transformed him all point toward a character with his own history rather than simply an evil Iron Man variant.
Whether Downey’s familiar face eventually becomes part of the story remains one of Doomsday’s biggest mysteries.
For now, Victor’s relationship with Reed may be the one that matters most.
This Is Starting to Look Like the Road to ‘Secret Wars’
Marvel has spent years introducing incursions, alternate realities and fractured timelines throughout the Multiverse Saga.
Now they’re finally crashing together.
The Avengers.
The Fantastic Four.
The X-Men.
Doctor Doom.
And an army of Sentinels.
Avengers: Doomsday isn’t looking like another multiverse cameo parade. The newest footage suggests Marvel is trying to build its massive crossover around something considerably more personal: families, worlds and people desperately trying to hold onto what they have left.
Victor Von Doom already lost his.
Now everyone else may be about to find out what he’s willing to destroy because of it.
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, arrives in theaters December 18, 2026.
