Kingdom Hearts IV Sets Late 2027 Release Window and Reveals Coco World

By August 14, 2026

Sora’s next adventure finally has a release window — and he’s heading to the Land of the Dead.

Square Enix revealed a new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase, confirming that the long-awaited sequel is targeting a late 2027 release.

But that wasn’t the only major reveal.

The new footage also confirmed Pixar’s Coco as the first Disney world officially revealed for Kingdom Hearts IV.

Kingdom Hearts IV Is Coming in Late 2027

An exact release date has not been announced, but the new late-2027 window finally gives fans a clearer idea of when Sora’s next mainline adventure will arrive.

Kingdom Hearts IV was originally announced in 2022 before spending years largely out of the spotlight. Square Enix brought it back with new gameplay footage during a Nintendo Direct in June 2026, but that appearance stopped short of giving the game a release window.

D23 changed that.

The newly released showcase trailer now places the game in late 2027.

Sora Is Going to the World of Coco

The bigger surprise may be where he’s going.

The D23 footage revealed a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, taking Sora, Donald and Goofy into the colorful Land of the Dead. The footage included recognizable imagery from the film and an appearance from Miguel.

And frankly, Coco feels almost unfairly perfect for Kingdom Hearts.

This is a franchise that has spent more than two decades obsessing over hearts, memories, loss, identity and the bonds that continue even when people are separated.

Coco built an entire movie around many of those same ideas.

If Square Enix wanted a Pixar world capable of doing more than simply giving Sora somewhere pretty to fight Heartless, this is a very interesting choice.

It also makes Coco the first Disney world officially revealed for Kingdom Hearts IV.

D23 Just Became a Very Big Weekend for Kingdom Hearts

The Kingdom Hearts IV reveal arrived alongside another massive announcement for the franchise: Disney is also developing Kingdom Hearts: The Series, an anime project for Disney+ and Disney Channel.

And Disney still isn’t finished talking about Kingdom Hearts.

A dedicated DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS presentation is scheduled for Saturday, August 15 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. PT at D23.

So after years of wondering when Square Enix would finally start talking about Kingdom Hearts IV again, fans suddenly have a release window, their first confirmed Disney world, a new television series — and another hour-long franchise presentation still ahead.

Apparently D23 decided we had waited long enough.
