Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Hits North American Theaters in February 2027 With Original Dub Cast

The Shinn Asuka-led prequel to SEED FREEDOM opens in North American theaters in February 2027, with Matt Hill, Sam Vincent and Matthew Erickson back for the English dub.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO opens in North American theaters in February 2027, and the original English dub is coming along for the ride: Matt Hill (Kira Yamato), Sam Vincent (Athrun Zala) and Matthew Erickson (Shinn Asuka) are officially reprising their roles. The news dropped Thursday at the Gundam Showcase 2026 panel on the Main Stage at New York Comic Con 2026, with all three actors on stage together, and The Nerd Wire was in the room.

Bandai Namco Filmworks confirmed the window and the cast in its official announcement, which positions the film as a prequel to SEED FREEDOM. That’s a big shadow to stand in: per the release, SEED FREEDOM “earned more than 5 billion yen and drew 3 million admissions to become the highest-grossing theatrical release in Gundam history.” No exact opening date or North American distributor has been named yet.

On stage, the moment was billed as the trio’s first big-stage reunion, more than 20 years after the series. Hill told the crowd: “When a show ends you think, okay, you know, you may not ever get to do stuff again.” Erickson put it more simply: “Coming back together, meeting these guys again and being in New York, this is like a dream come true.”

Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO puts Shinn Asuka front and center in C.E. 74

This one is Shinn’s movie. Speaking through an interpreter, producer Kaori Shida said Shinn is the protagonist, with Kira and Athrun in supporting roles around him, and that the story took shape while director Mitsuo Fukuda and the team were planning SEED FREEDOM, as a way to go deeper into the characters’ feelings. She added that the key visual’s concept centers on red, the film’s concept color, and on Shinn’s state of mind after the events of SEED DESTINY.

The official synopsis picks up in C.E. 74: “The great war is over, but Shinn has yet to decide what course he should follow.” A battle-hardened mobile suit is transferred from ZAFT to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island, and then things go sideways: “That night, however, the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by persons unknown.” Shinn and his comrades head back into battle to recover it before the situation escalates.

Joining Shinn are Lunamaria Hawke, Agnes Giebenrath (who debuted in SEED FREEDOM) and Leonard Valway, “who makes his first appearance in an animated work in this title,” and Kira, Athrun and Yzak Jule are back. The Strike Freedom Gundam and Infinite Justice Gundam return from SEED DESTINY, joined by a new mobile suit, the GOUF Ignited Custom. The panel also showed off Gunpla from the film, including an HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam with a booster unit.

Erickson, a self-described Gunpla obsessive who has recreated a favorite SEED DESTINY scene in 1/144 scale, explained the slippery slope: “It starts off, you don’t need any tools, you just click them together. But after a while you find yourself, oh, you know what, I’m gonna need an airbrush now.” His favorite mobile suit is the Impulse, even though he knows the Destiny is more powerful.

The screenplay was written during production of SEED FREEDOM by series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita and Fukuda, and that makes SEED FREEDOM ZERO more than a gap-filler. In his official statement, titled “With 20 Years of Yearnings” and also presented at the panel, Fukuda wrote: “This is the final work completed by my late wife Chiaki Morosawa, the series composition writer. Until not long ago, I was halfway resigned to the idea that the screenplay might forever remain on the shelf, but now it has been actually made into a film thanks to the ardent support of all the fans.”

He added that the story “shows the characters’ yearnings that Chiaki was so eager to depict, and links together ‘DESTINY’ and ‘FREEDOM.’”

SEED Grand Prix voting is open through Nov. 30

Bandai Namco Filmworks has released a teaser visual and a new trailer, along with comments from the Japanese cast and Fukuda, and the official film site launched Thursday. Meanwhile, the MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED Series Grand Prix 2026 asks fans to rank memorable moments from scenes featuring 55 characters across Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM. You can vote once per character per day through Nov. 30, 2026 (PDT), with results due in December.

The panel also said GUNDAM CHANNEL INTL on YouTube is streaming every episode of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and SEED DESTINY for free, with Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn also free to stream this month.

Gundam’s road to its 50th anniversary in 2029

Executive producer Naohiro Ogata opened the panel with the bigger picture: Gundam turns 50 in 2029, and new shows, events and products are in the works for it. His slate included Kenji Kamiyama’s new TV series Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, the live-action Gundam film with Legendary and a new Mobile Suit Gundam Wing animation project.

First up is Gundam-Con, set for January 9–11, 2027, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, according to Anime News Network. Ogata said the goal is to take the convention to the U.S., Asia and beyond before 2029.
