Nicolas Cage says he didn’t sign an AI waiver for Spider-Noir

Nicolas Cage said during a panel on the Empire Stage on Saturday that he did not sign a waiver that would have allowed AI to be used on Spider-Noir, the Prime Video series he starred in, Variety reports. In Cage’s account, Amazon asked him to sign one. Variety describes that request as alleged, and Amazon’s side is not in its report. Cage called Amazon a very AI-friendly company, citing what he said was a $50 billion investment in OpenAI. “I am not an AI-friendly actor,” he said, adding that he is probably not going to work with the studio again and is fine with that.

Amazon canceled Spider-Noir last month after one season, days before the first weekend of the Emmy Awards, where it held 11 nominations, the most of any Prime Video program this year. The show was Cage’s first leading TV role, and he said he wants to do more. Next, he said, is a season of HBO’s True Detective, joking that his agent was somewhere listening as he announced it first. HBO had not responded to Variety’s request for comment. Cage also said he wants to work with Gen Z filmmakers who came up through YouTube, and praised Backrooms director Kane Parsons.

Naruto gets a crossover anime and a new manga

A new anime TV series, NARUTOxNINKU, was announced Saturday at a Naruto panel, Variety reports. It’s a crossover with the manga NINKU, supervised by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto and NINKU creator Koji Kiriyama. In the series description Variety carries, Kakashi gives Team 7 (Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura) a mission with Naruto as acting leader, and the team gets lost in another world, where they meet a frog-faced boy named Fusuke. Variety’s report doesn’t give a premiere date, platform or studio.

A teaser at the very end of the panel revealed Shadow Rising, a new Naruto manga from Kishimoto, with more details due at Jump Festa 2027 in December. The panel also shared a message from Destin Daniel Cretton, director of the live-action Naruto film, who said the film is in progress and there will be more to share soon. Variety’s report has no cast, date or title news for the film.

Co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau shared the news at Saturday’s Star Trek Universe panel, where they also showed a first look. The release doesn’t give an exact date. Bill Nighy joins as Nyk Ake, Nahla’s estranged father, and Rosemarie DeWitt as Laytha Sadal, Tarima’s mother and First Lady of Betazed. The cadets’ second year aboard the USS Athena brings rivalries, shaky diplomatic negotiations, a competitive schoolwide tournament and a mysterious new cadet.

Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diane and Robert Picardo joined Kurtzman and Landau for the Q&A, moderated by Collider’s Perri Nemiroff. The panel also marked the franchise’s 60th anniversary with William Shatner, who shared clips and behind-the-scenes stories about Kirk’s moments in a conversation moderated by Ben Stiller. The release lists no announcements from that portion.
