Gotham’s new Dark Knight has a date. Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest, the middle chapter of Warner Bros. Animation and DC’s animated Knightfall trilogy, arrives on digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, Dec. 15, according to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s announcement.

If you know the ’90s comics, you know where this goes. Part 1: Knightfall, released in August, ended with Bane breaking Bruce Wayne’s back. Now Bruce can’t wear the cowl, and the job falls to Jean-Paul Valley, the Order of St. Dumas assassin better known as Azrael. Warner Bros.’ synopsis puts the question plainly: will Azrael’s more violent methods be enough to stop Bane?

Anyone who has seen that armored suit and those bladed gauntlets can guess the answer is complicated.

Cast and crew

Jeff Wamester directs from a script by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales is supervising producer, Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau produce, and Sam Register and Michael E. Uslan are executive producers. The film runs 76 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence.

What’s on the disc

The digital, 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions include two featurettes, according to the announcement: “Azrael Batman: The Next Knight” and “Knightfall: To Kill… Or Not to Kill.” That second title is the whole moral argument of Knightquest in seven words.

One note on the date: a Movies Anywhere pre-order listing currently shows Dec. 8. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s announcement gives Dec. 15 for digital and disc alike, so that’s the date we’re going with. We’ll update if the studio moves it.

What’s next

The trilogy wraps with Batman: Knightfall Part 3: KnightsEnd in 2027, which, if it follows the comics, is where Bruce comes back for his cape. Catch up on the rest of our Batman coverage, including the latest on The Batman Part II.
