Steven Soderbergh Steps In to Help Matt Reeves Finish The Batman Part II

Steven Soderbergh will help Matt Reeves finish shooting The Batman Part II while Reeves handles a family matter. Reeves: "I am not leaving." Gunn: "Matt is still the director." Still dated Feb. 18, 2028.

By October 16, 2026

Steven Soderbergh is stepping onto the set of The Batman Part II to help Matt Reeves finish principal photography, and everyone involved wants one thing understood: Reeves is still the director. DC Studios confirmed the arrangement Thursday, Oct. 15, roughly a week and a half after production paused so Reeves could attend to a family matter. Reeves and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn both followed up within hours to shut down the “replaced” narrative before it took hold.

What DC Studios said

The studio’s statement, as reported by Variety and Gizmodo, frames this as Soderbergh volunteering, not the studio swapping directors:

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”

DC Studios

Two details in that statement matter. “Final weeks of principal photography” means the bulk of the film is already shot. And “Matt and Steven will work closely together” means Reeves isn’t gone; he’s the one Soderbergh is answering to.

Reeves: “I am not leaving The Batman Part II”

Reeves addressed the news himself on X Thursday night:

“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”

Gunn: “Matt is still the director … and always will be”

Gunn, who has spent much of the year fielding Batman Part II questions (including the back-to-back filming rumor he knocked down in August), was blunt on Threads:

“Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be. I can’t express how profoundly grateful and moved we are by Steven’s offer to help him complete his vision.”

When a fan asked when Reeves would be “back,” Gunn pushed back on the premise: “Like I said above Matt is still the director, he doesn’t need to be ‘back.’ He’s still here.”

Soderbergh on protecting Reeves’ vision

Soderbergh’s own statement, carried by Variety and Gizmodo, reads as a fan’s pitch as much as a filmmaker’s:

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

Steven Soderbergh

It’s a sensible fit. Soderbergh shoots fast, often operates his own camera, and has spent the last few years turning out tightly controlled genre pictures (Black Bag, Presence). “Integrate seamlessly” is the job description, and he’s one of the few directors with the discipline and the résumé to take it without making it about himself.

How we got here

Production on the sequel, which has been shooting in the U.K. (our August report from the Glasgow shoot has the Batmobile sightings), was paused in early October. The studio’s statement at the time: “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.” Gizmodo reports Reeves had shot roughly two-thirds of the film before the pause and that Soderbergh’s remaining work will be in London; DC Studios hasn’t put a number on it.

Reeves hasn’t said anything about the family matter beyond “challenging time,” and neither has the studio. We’re not going to guess, and we’d suggest you don’t either.

Release date and cast

The Batman Part II is still dated for Feb. 18, 2028, the slot it landed on in June after moving off October 2026 and then October 2027. Nothing in Thursday’s statements suggests that changes. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, and he’s already told us the sequel is a “real left turn” from the first film. Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright are back, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the cast.

We’ll update as DC Studios says more. For the rest of DC’s fall, including Clayface on Oct. 23, see our Movies section.
