Jed Mercurio has a new thriller, and it’s going underwater. Netflix has set Tuesday, Dec. 1 for Trinity, its series from the Bodyguard creator starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden, and released the first trailer and a batch of first-look stills alongside the date.
Netflix’s Tudum announcement puts the season at seven episodes, all dropping at once. (Deadline’s report lists eight; we’re going with Netflix’s count.)
Who’s who in Trinity
Mbatha-Raw plays Commander Katherine Decker, second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine. Madden plays Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. Netflix’s logline: a heroic naval officer’s newfound connection to the secretary of defense leads her to uncover a trail of secrets. Deadline’s version is blunter, saying Preston may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.

Mercurio writes the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. It’s a reunion: Madden starred in Mercurio’s Bodyguard and his Lady Chatterley’s Lover adaptation. Asked about influences, Mercurio pointed Tudum to a 1987 political thriller: “One of my all-time favorites is No Way Out.”

The supporting cast, with roles per Netflix:
- Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Vandenburg
- JD Pardo as Tom Reyes
- Bruce Greenwood as Special Agent Eric Colby
- Robert Wisdom as Admiral Griff Tatum
- Kirk Acevedo as Captain Jock Campbell
- Ben Cotton as Special Agent Jake Ryan
- James Remar as President Paul Barnard
- Jason Ralph as Brooks Vandenburg
- Mark O’Brien as Dr. Brian York

Behind the camera
Michael Cuesta directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Bradley Gardner and Wendy Mericle also executive produce, with Jimmy Mulville for HTM Television. 20th Television is the studio, according to Deadline. Netflix rates the series TV-MA.

Trinity premieres Dec. 1 on Netflix. Bodyguard is streaming there now if you want the Mercurio-Madden warm-up.
