The Big Bang Theory spinoff surprised its SDCC audience with a very different Raj Koothrappali — and then wasted absolutely no time putting him through hell.
Warning: Major spoilers for the premiere of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follow.
If Stuart Fails to Save the Universe wanted to prove immediately that it wasn’t going to play things safe with The Big Bang Theory nostalgia, mission accomplished.
During the show’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation, HBO Max surprised fans with the premiere episode — and with the return of Kunal Nayyar as Raj Koothrappali, appearing on screen as the character for the first time since The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019.
But this is definitely not the Raj fans remember.
Kunal Nayyar Returns as a Very Different Raj
Nayyar appears roughly 12 minutes into the premiere sporting long hair, a mustache and a full beard, almost unrecognizable from the neatly put-together astrophysicist viewers spent 12 seasons with on The Big Bang Theory.
There’s a reason for the makeover.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) after he accidentally triggers a multiversal disaster involving technology created by Sheldon and Leonard. Stuart, Denise, Bert and Barry Kripke find themselves traveling through alternate realities populated by very different versions of characters from the original series.
The Raj we meet in the premiere is one of them — hardened by a much darker world and being held prisoner by an alternate version of Kripke.
And his reunion with the franchise is painfully short-lived.
Raj’s Return Comes With a Brutal Twist
After staying behind in an attempt to repair a device that could help save the multiverse, Raj is shot and killed by Kripke.
Yes.
They brought Raj back after seven years and immediately killed him.
Thankfully, this is Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, where “dead” comes with a pretty enormous multiverse-shaped asterisk. The character killed in the premiere is an alternate-universe version of Raj, meaning the original Raj from The Big Bang Theory timeline remains untouched — and other versions of him can still exist.
That freedom appears to be a major part of what the spinoff intends to do with its legacy characters: bring back familiar faces without simply recreating the sitcom that ended seven years ago.
That makes Nayyar’s appearance especially interesting.
In 2024, when asked about potentially returning to Raj, Nayyar said revisiting the character still felt a little too soon. Two years later, the version that finally convinced him back couldn’t be much further removed from the Raj audiences knew.
More ‘Big Bang Theory’ Returns Are Coming
Raj apparently won’t be the only familiar face getting pulled into the chaos.
Speaking at the show’s SDCC panel, co-creator Bill Prady confirmed that “there are more” returning members of the Big Bang Theory family ahead, including actors who previously played smaller characters in the original series.
That’s where the multiverse premise could actually give Stuart Fails to Save the Universe something more interesting to do than simply parade old characters across the screen.
These aren’t necessarily the same people fans remember.
They can be heroes. Villains. Survivors. Apparently, they can also show up looking like they’ve spent several years preparing for the apocalypse before getting murdered by Barry Kripke.
For a franchise built around characters who spent years debating comic books and science fiction, throwing them directly into a ridiculous multiversal adventure feels strangely appropriate.
And if Raj’s return is the benchmark, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has made one thing pretty clear:
Nostalgia is not going to keep anybody safe.
