‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Eyes Season 3 With a Smaller ‘Soft Reboot,’ Reports Say

Variety and TheWrap report Apple TV and Legendary are in talks on a smaller, reworked Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 3, but nothing is official.

By October 30, 2026

Apple TV and Legendary are reportedly talking about a third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the version being floated sounds less like a sequel and more like a fresh start. Both Variety and TheWrap say talks are underway. Neither says a season has been ordered.

What’s being reported

TheWrap’s Drew Taylor reports that Season 3 would bring in new writers and new Titans in what he calls a “soft reboot.” He adds that it’s unclear what shape that reboot would take, but that he expects things to get smaller. His reasoning: the show is a beast to make, with international shoots, heavy visual effects and a big cast led by Kurt Russell, and Season 2 was even bigger than Season 1.

The showrunner question is where Variety adds the most. Citing an individual with knowledge of the situation, Variety’s Joe Otterson reports that Season 3 would be helmed by a new showrunner and new writers, and that multiple people have already been approached about taking over the series. Nobody has been named. TheWrap doesn’t name a Season 3 showrunner either. For reference, Chris Black co-created the show with Matt Fraction and ran Season 2.

Variety also reports the new season would feature new Titans from Legendary’s MonsterVerse, and says there’s no word yet on whether the characters from the first two seasons carry over. Which Titans? Neither report says.

The spinoff, and what’s official

The other piece of news is a separate, still-untitled spinoff following a younger Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell, set in 1984. TheWrap says it is “still likely moving forward,” and Variety describes it as Shaw on a mission to stop the Soviets from unleashing a devastating new Titan, with a cast that includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbæk, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic. Joby Harold is showrunning that series, and neither outlet ties him to Season 3.

Nothing here is official. Neither Apple nor Legendary has publicly confirmed Season 3 talks, and we found no statement from either one, so treat all of it as reported until they say otherwise.

Where Monarch fits

Season 2 premiered Feb. 27, 2026 on Apple TV, per Apple TV Press, with Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell sharing the role of Lee Shaw across two timelines. TheWrap notes it ended with the older Shaw tracking Rodan in South America, which makes a clean slate a real choice rather than a forced one.

Monarch is the small-screen branch of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, the shared universe that began with 2014’s Godzilla and runs through Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. If you want the Toho side of the monster world, we have the latest on the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer.

The takeaway: a leaner, newer-crew Monarch could be the smartest way to keep the franchise’s TV arm alive without the sprawl. We’ll update when Apple or Legendary says something on the record.
