Mike Flanagan is in talks to showrun, write and direct Amazon MGM Studios’ Warhammer 40,000 series, with Henry Cavill still attached to star and executive produce.
Per Deadline, Flanagan has already completed initial story outlines and is moving to script.
Two things to hold at once: this is the most significant creative development the project has had, and it is still “in talks.” A 40K adaptation has been announced, stalled and re-announced since Cavill was first attached in December 2022. Amazon MGM acquired global rights from Games Workshop in December 2024. Flanagan’s arrival follows the multiyear overall deal he signed with Amazon MGM in March.
Why this is a better match than it sounds
Flanagan is usually described as a horror director. That’s true and it undersells him.
Watch what his stories are actually about. Midnight Mass is about a church that consumes its congregation. The Fall of the House of Usher is about a corporation that eats its own children. The Haunting of Hill House is about a family. Bly Manor is about a household.
Every one is an institution built to protect people that becomes the thing destroying them.
Now consider the setting he’s been handed.
The Imperium of Man is a galaxy-spanning theocracy roughly forty thousand years in the future. It sustains itself by sacrificing a thousand psychic humans a day to keep a dying god-emperor alive on a golden throne. It sends conscripts to die in wars they will never understand, and it burns entire worlds to stop ideas from spreading. It was built to save humanity from extinction, and it long ago became the primary thing humanity needs saving from.
That’s not a sci-fi property that happens to be dark. That’s a Mike Flanagan thesis with tanks.
What is Warhammer 40,000?
For anyone arriving from the horror side: 40K is a tabletop miniatures wargame created by Games Workshop in 1987, and one of the largest science fiction settings ever built. It’s where the phrase “grimdark” comes from — the tagline is “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.”
It has forty years of novels, video games, and lore behind it, and a fanbase that is both enormous and famously exacting about detail.
And who is Mike Flanagan?
For anyone arriving from the 40K side: Flanagan is the most acclaimed horror television director working. The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game.
His work is defined by long dialogue scenes, grief, faith, and characters who monologue at length about what they believe. He is not an action director. Which raises the interesting question below.
The Cavill question
If Amazon is steering this toward gothic horror rather than action spectacle — as Flanagan’s involvement strongly suggests — it’s worth asking what Cavill is actually playing.
The default assumption has always been a Space Marine: eight feet tall, chemically augmented, sealed in ceramite. They’re superb at war and deliberately short on interiority, which is rather the point of them.
That’s a difficult instrument for the kind of intimate, talky dread Flanagan builds his work from.
Nobody has said what Cavill is playing. But it’s a question worth sitting with.
