Lanterns is DC Studios’ first major television series under the current regime, and it isn’t the space epic most people expect from Green Lantern. It’s a murder mystery set in the American heartland.

Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, streaming on HBO Max.

What is Lanterns about?
Per HBO’s official logline: the series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
That phrase — earth-based mystery with cosmic ties — is the shape of the show. The case is local. What’s behind it isn’t.
The structure is the part worth noting: this is a detective story, not a war across space sectors. Closer to True Detective than to a superhero team-up — two mismatched partners, one case, eight hours.

HBO’s official cast list names only two roles: Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Everyone else is billed by name only. Several roles have been widely reported — including Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner — but HBO has not announced them, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.
Who made it?
Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who co-wrote the pilot together. Mundy serves as showrunner.
That combination tells you a lot. Mundy ran Ozark. Lindelof made Watchmen and The Leftovers. And Tom King is one of the most acclaimed DC comics writers of the last decade — a former CIA officer whose Vision, Mister Miracle, and Batman runs are defined by grief, duty, and people trying to hold a life together while doing an impossible job.
Nobody assembles that trio to make a space adventure.
Who’s directing?
James Hawes directs the first two episodes. Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also direct.

Gunn and Safran’s names matter here — as DC Studios’ co-CEOs, their direct involvement signals this isn’t a side project. It’s part of the connected DC slate.
Do I need to know the comics?
No. It’s built as an entry point.
But two things will deepen it:
John Stewart is a Marine and an architect, and for a generation he is Green Lantern — the version from the Justice League animated series. He’s the most grounded Lantern DC has.
The Manhunters, glimpsed in the trailer, are the Guardians of the Universe’s first attempt at galactic peacekeepers — robots built to enforce order who ultimately turned on the people they were made to protect. They’re the reason the Green Lantern Corps exists, and they’re a deep pull for a first season.

Yes — HBO debuted the full trailer at San Diego Comic-Con in July, during a panel with Chandler, Pierre, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and creators Mundy, Lindelof, and King.
