NEON has released the official U.S. trailer for Fjord, the Palme d’Or-winning drama from Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, ahead of its theatrical release on October 9, 2026

The film follows Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate with their five children to a remote coastal community in Norway. Their children quickly become close with a neighboring family, but tensions surrounding the Gheorghius’ religious beliefs and traditional approach to parenting begin to grow.

When their teenage daughter arrives at school with bruises, those tensions escalate into allegations of abuse and an investigation that places the entire family under scrutiny.

Rather than giving audiences an easy answer about who is right, the trailer sets up a conflict involving faith, parenting, cultural differences and the limits of institutional intervention — particularly when concern for children collides with assumptions about a family whose values differ from those around them.

Stan stars opposite Reinsve, marking the pair’s second film together following 2024’s A Different Man. Stan plays Mihai, while Reinsve portrays his Norwegian wife Lisbet. The cast also includes Vanessa Cebane, Jonathan Ciprian Breeze, Lisa Carlehed, Henrikke Lund-Olsen, Ellen Dorrit Petersen and Lisa Loven Kongsli.

Fjord premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, giving NEON its seventh consecutive Palme winner with U.S. distribution rights. Mungiu previously won Cannes’ top prize for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

The October release also puts Fjord directly into awards-season territory. NEON has previously used similar fall release windows for Palme d’Or winners including Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall and Anora, all of which went on to significant Academy Awards recognition.

For Stan, the film also represents a return to his Romanian roots. The Romanian-American actor has previously spoken about wanting to work with Mungiu and about the opportunity to perform in Romanian — something the first trailer gives audiences an early glimpse of.

Fjord opens in U.S. theaters October 9, 2026, from NEON.
