Netflix saw a measurable download bump and GTA VI preorders spiked after the game’s extended first-look footage premiered on the streamer, according to Sensor Tower data reported by TheWrap.
The Numbers Behind the Surge
Netflix’s U.S. app downloads rose 24% day-over-day last Thursday and were up 20% against the app’s 30-day average. The growth was almost entirely on iOS, where downloads climbed 54% while Android downloads actually fell 13%. Netflix’s ranking on the iOS App Store jumped from its usual spot in the mid-70s to as high as 35th.
GTA VI preorders moved even more sharply. They rose 436% on Thursday compared with the day before, with PlayStation 5-specific preorders up 606% and Xbox Series X/S preorders up 127%. The surge held through Friday, when preorders were still running 572% above the 30-day average.
A Trailer Netflix Didn’t Need to Host Exclusively
The extended look had already been sitting on YouTube since the prior Friday, where it had drawn more than 15.6 million views, before Netflix’s own version became the platform’s third most-watched movie by that Monday, notable given that the identical footage was a free click away the whole time. Netflix first carried the extended look as part of a promotional tie-in with Rockstar.
The download and preorder spikes arrive with GTA VI still on track for its Nov. 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, following an earlier leak that Rockstar called heartbreaking, which didn’t change the release date.
