Who TF Is Raza? VisionQuest Just Brought Back the Iron Man Villain Everyone Assumed Was Dead

Raza held Tony Stark in a cave in Iron Man (2008). Eighteen years later he's hunting Vision in Madripoor. Who TF Is Raza, what happened to him, and why now.

[Spoilers for VisionQuest Episode 6, and for an 18-year-old movie you’ve seen.]

The man who walks into the Chimp House Cafe in Madripoor with a crew, a jamming device and “enough adamantium bullets to finish the job” is not a new character. He’s the first villain the MCU ever had.

The short version

Raza — full name Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, played then and now by Faran Tahir — commanded the Ten Rings cell that held Tony Stark prisoner in the cave in Iron Man (2008): the first face the MCU ever put on a villain, eighteen years before the show caught up with him.

He was created for the film as the on-the-ground face of an organization whose leadership the movie kept off screen. Which is the point of him now.

What happened to him

Most people remember Raza dying. He didn’t — not on screen. Late in Iron Man, Obadiah Stane arrives at the Ten Rings camp, paralyzes Raza with a sonic device, and Stane’s men open fire. The film never shows Raza’s body. He was presumed dead by everyone.

VisionQuest Episode 6 reads the cut the way the show reads everything: as a lie of omission. Paladin’s greeting is the recap — “Between Stark’s old partner and the occasional Ten Rings torture chamber, shouldn’t you be dead or in chains?” — and Raza’s answer is the only thing about him that’s new: “Your client is very influential.”

So: he survived Stane, survived whatever the Ten Rings did to a commander who lost Tony Stark, and is now a bounty hunter with a crew, an adamantium budget, and five minutes of patience. He has not appeared in any MCU project between the two, and the show doesn’t fill the gap. (We’ll say plainly what we don’t know: how this Ten Rings cell relates to the organization as Shang-Chi later showed it is unaddressed in Episode 6. Nobody in the scene says Wenwu.)

What he’s doing in VisionQuest

He’s the replacement. Paladin’s client terminated Paladin’s contract in Episode 3 and, per the “bounty hunter message boards” Ultron cites in Episode 5, “engaged other predators.” Raza is the other predator — the client’s second hire, with the same instruction Paladin had: “I need the Synthezoid intact.” Paladin offers to hand over his fees so “everybody goes home”; Raza’s answer is that Paladin’s contract “was terminated,” and he gives him five minutes. Paladin takes an adamantium round in the fight that follows.

Two things make that more than a cameo. First, Raza is the first person in this show to describe the client’s reach out loud — “your client is very influential” — which tells us the client has reach into the Ten Rings’ world as well as S.W.O.R.D.’s files. Second, he’s the Iron Man half of a pattern the series has been building since Episode 1: every antagonist is downstream of Tony Stark. Ultron is Stark’s “bastard child.” Jocasta’s code was sold to Stark’s company. Paladin’s armor came from Ten Rings negotiations. And the man with the gun in Madripoor is the man who once held Stark in a cave.

What to watch for

Powers, gear, defining traits

None, none, and “patient.” He’s a commander, not a fighter: in Iron Man he let others do the work and kept the threat quiet. In VisionQuest he arrives with a jammer that blinds Vision’s hacked drones, adamantium rounds that can breach a synthezoid, and a countdown. Faran Tahir plays him the way he did in 2008 — courteous, unhurried, and certain the other man is already finished.

Raza’s survival is inferred from the film (his death is never shown) and confirmed by Episode 6; no MCU project depicts his escape. “Hamidmi” per the original casting reports.
