Pokémon turns 30 this year, and Pokémon Center and Fender are marking it with two guitars: the Pokémon Red Version Stratocaster and the Pokémon Green Version Telecaster. Both are Made in Japan, and both were announced Oct. 30, per a press release from Fender Music K.K.

Pixel art and a glowing pickguard
Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green arrived in Japan in 1996, and the guitars’ designs use pixel art based on those original games.
The pickguard carries a dot motif that, according to the release, can look fluorescent or glowing depending on the viewing angle. The neck plate has a special 30th anniversary dot logo, and each guitar gets dedicated single-coil pickups.

The 8-Bit Sound System
The gimmick: an “8-Bit Sound System.” Press the volume knob and the guitar adds an 8-bit, game-style sound to its tone. Pokémon’s US announcement describes it as a toggle to 8-bit audio with a retro ring that recalls a first Game Boy.

A Strat and a Tele wearing the colors of the first two games, with a knob that makes them chirp like a handheld, is a very specific and very fun object.
What comes with them
Per Fender’s Japan release, each guitar ships with a pick tin holding 11 picks: 10 Pokémon dot-art designs and one with the 30th anniversary logo. An original hard case and a certificate of authenticity are also included.
Price and how to buy
In Japan, each guitar is priced at 396,000 yen, tax included. They will be sold by lottery on Pokémon Center Online (Japan), per Pokémon Japan’s listing.
