Paranormal Activity is going home. Paramount has moved the new Blumhouse Atomic entry from May 21, 2027 to October 22, 2027, the studio announced Friday, pushing it six months down the calendar and back into the pre-Halloween window where every mainline film in the series has opened.
The date came out as a footnote to bigger news: Paramount’s Danny McBride-directed G.I. Joe reimagining, with Bradley Cooper as Duke, is set for October 20, 2028. Paranormal Activity got one paragraph underneath it. For horror fans it’s the more interesting paragraph.
What’s moving, and what isn’t
The film itself hasn’t changed. Ian Tuason, whose debut Undertone played Sundance this year before A24 picked it up, writes and directs. Chase Yi (Mythic Quest), Sonia Mena (Tell Me Lies) and Maya da Costa (Girls Like Girls) star. Jason Blum, James Wan and franchise creator Oren Peli produce, and Paramount and Blumhouse Atomic are financing it together, with Paramount distributing worldwide. It’s the eighth film in a series that has made more than $900 million globally, almost all of it on budgets that would barely cover a studio movie’s catering.
The one real plot detail is the one Blumhouse gave up at New York Comic Con last month: this installment takes place in the house from Peli’s 2007 original. Six films, a stage play and a Broadway-bound production later, the franchise is heading back to the single most recognizable location it has, which tells you something about how Tuason is approaching it.
Why October matters
May was always an odd fit. Paranormal Activity opened in October. So did 2, 3, 4 and The Ghost Dimension, and Next of Kin went straight to Paramount+ the week of Halloween in 2021. The Marked Ones, in January 2014, is the only one that strayed, and it’s the one nobody brings up. A franchise whose entire identity is a nanny cam pointed at a dark hallway belongs in the fall, and Paramount has evidently decided the same.
It also lands the film three weeks after Blumhouse’s own 2027 horror slate starts getting crowded. When Jason Blum and James Wan announced the Blumhouse Atomic name on Tuesday, the 2027 film list already included this one alongside The Exorcist: Martyrs, Blair Witch, The Revenge of La Llorona and a Paranormal Activity stage production. Spacing the studio’s biggest legacy horror brand away from summer blockbuster season is the kind of move you make when you expect the movie to open on its own name.
We’ll update when there’s a trailer or a title that isn’t just Paranormal Activity.
