Jamie Campbell Bower’s Rings of Power Role Revealed: He’s Celeborn

Jamie Campbell Bower plays Celeborn — Galadriel's husband — in Rings of Power Season 3. His "lover-boy" description and the Tolkien inspiration, explained.

The mystery didn’t last long.

Jamie Campbell Bower’s Rings of Power role is official: he plays Celeborn — Elf lord, warrior, and husband of Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel — per Empire’s exclusive first look at Season 3, premiering November 11

When Bower’s casting was first announced, the role was kept under wraps. This answers one of the show’s longest-running questions.

Who is Celeborn?

If you only know the films, you may not have registered him — Celeborn appears in The Fellowship of the Ring beside Galadriel in Lothlórien, and the movies give him very little to do.

In Tolkien’s writing he’s considerably more: an Elf lord of Doriath, one of the wisest of his kind, and Galadriel’s husband across thousands of years of Middle-earth history. Their marriage is one of the great long partnerships of the legendarium — two enormously powerful people who chose each other and stayed chosen through the fall of kingdoms.

Which is what makes his absence from the show conspicuous. Galadriel has been searching for Sauron since Season 1, and her husband has been missing the entire time — described as lost to the war. Every season she’s carried that.

What Bower said

Bower described the character to Empire as a “lover-boy” — a deliberate pivot from Stranger Things‘ Vecna.

More interesting: he said the dynamic with Galadriel draws partly on J.R.R. Tolkien’s own marriage to his wife Edith, anchored in “longing and yearning.” Tolkien had Edith’s name carved on their shared gravestone as Lúthien, alongside his own as Beren — the great immortal-mortal love story of his mythology. Building an Elf marriage on that reference is a real swing.

Celeborn will also take a leadership role in the season’s central conflict, the War of the Elves and Sauron.
