Simon Pegg is voicing the Balrog. That’s the reveal fans keep circling back to after Prime Video’s The Rings of Power Season 3 trailer, unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con — and it’s as unexpected as it sounds.
The Balrog — the hulking, fire-and-shadow demon of Tolkien lore — is getting a voice, reportedly speaking for the first time, as it factors into Sauron’s forging of the One Ring. Handing that creature dialogue at all is a swing. Handing it to Pegg, best known for comedy and the Mission: Impossible films, is the part fans are still processing.
A bold choice for a season going darker
The casting fits the tone the trailer sets. Season 3’s footage leans into destruction — Sauron crafting the One Ring as Middle-earth burns — and the show is clearly moving into its most mythic, dangerous chapter yet. Giving the Balrog a voice is part of that escalation.
Whether it lands is the open question. A talking Balrog is not something most Tolkien fans pictured, and Pegg is a genuinely surprising pick. It’s the kind of choice that will either be a highlight or a lightning rod. Either way, it has people talking — which is likely the point.
When you’ll see it
The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres Nov. 11 on Prime Video, with the season rolling out through late November. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay remain at the helm.
