Fallout Season 3 Set Photos May Have Just Revealed the Order of the Quill

The Brotherhood of Steel appears to be getting a little nerdier in Fallout Season 3 — and one symbol spotted on set points toward a remarkably deep Fallout 3 cut.

The Brotherhood of Steel may be bringing one of its lesser-known divisions into Fallout Season 3.

First, the short version: the Order of the Quill is a deep-cut scribe division of the Brotherhood of Steel, dating back to Fallout 3 — exactly the kind of obscure faction these set photos seem to point to.

Photos taken during filming at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County show the familiar Brotherhood insignia hanging throughout the location — but some of the banners contain an additional detail: a quill writing inside an open book.

Those aren’t the only Season 3 photos making the rounds, either — more have surfaced from the show’s Pomona and Salt Lake City locations.

And for Fallout lore people, that symbol immediately raises one very specific possibility.

The Order of the Quill.

The faction has not been officially confirmed for Season 3, and neither Prime Video nor Bethesda has identified the symbol. But its appearance has fans digging all the way back to Fallout 3, where the Order of the Quill operated as one of the Brotherhood of Steel’s specialized Scribe divisions.

So, Who the Hell Is the Order of the Quill?

Despite all the power armor, giant weapons and general tendency toward solving problems with overwhelming military force, the Brotherhood of Steel was built around something bigger than combat:

Preserving knowledge.

That’s where the Order of the Quill comes in.

Introduced in Fallout 3, the Order specializes in recovering and preserving written information — including books and holotapes — while also maintaining historical records for the Brotherhood itself. In the Capital Wasteland, the division falls under the Brotherhood’s Scribes and is associated with figures including Proctor Elizabeth Jameson.

Basically, while other members of the Brotherhood are stomping through the Wasteland in power armor, the Order of the Quill is making sure humanity doesn’t lose everything it knew before it blew itself to hell.

Which suddenly feels pretty important heading into Season 3.

That Fallout Season 2 Ending Makes This Much More Interesting

Spoilers for the end of Fallout Season 2 below.

The Brotherhood storyline ended Season 2 with a pretty enormous tease.

In the finale’s post-credits scene, Elder Quintus receives blueprints for Liberty Prime Alpha, setting up the possible construction — or reconstruction — of one of the most ridiculous weapons in Fallout history.

Liberty Prime is not exactly the kind of thing you build from vibes.

If Quintus intends to turn those plans into an actual weapon, the Brotherhood is going to need technical records, historical information and people capable of finding and interpreting old-world knowledge.

You know.

Quill stuff.

That does not mean the Order’s appearance — if this is the Order — automatically ties directly to Liberty Prime Alpha. But following Season 2’s ending, introducing the Brotherhood division specifically responsible for preserving and recovering information would make a whole lot of narrative sense.

Are We Going Back to Fallout 3’s Capital Wasteland?

Now this is where things get dangerous.

Because the Order of the Quill is closely associated with the East Coast Brotherhood seen in Fallout 3, the set photos have already kicked off speculation that Season 3 could take viewers back to the Capital Wasteland.

And filming inside a natural history museum is certainly not helping.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles could theoretically stand in for one of Washington, D.C.’s museums or another archive-heavy location. Fallout 3 itself features the Brotherhood operating throughout the ruins of D.C., with recovered books and historical material playing directly into the work of its Scribes.

But there are two giant caveats here.

First, Season 3 is already pointing toward Colorado following Cooper Howard’s discovery about his family’s whereabouts.

Second, the quill-and-book banner itself has not previously been established in the games as an official Order of the Quill flag. Fans are identifying it based on what the organization represents, not matching it to a known emblem pulled directly from Fallout 3.

So does this confirm Washington, D.C.?

No.

Does it make the possibility considerably more interesting?

Oh, absolutely.

Fallout Season 3 Is Digging Deep

Even if the Natural History Museum never becomes the Smithsonian and Season 3 never steps foot in the Capital Wasteland, the potential Order of the Quill tease tells us something else about where Fallout may be headed.

The series is still willing to get weirdly specific with the games’ lore.

The Order of the Quill isn’t the Brotherhood of Steel. It isn’t Liberty Prime. It isn’t the Enclave, the NCR or another faction casual viewers immediately recognize.

It’s the kind of detail you find when you start digging several layers beneath them.

And if that little quill really does belong to the Brotherhood’s librarians?

Season 3 just gave Fallout 3 fans one more thing to start obsessing over.
