Xbox Is Testing a Disc-to-Digital Conversion Feature

Microsoft is rolling out a new disc-to-digital feature for Xbox that lets players convert their physical game discs into digital licenses, with Xbox Insiders getting first access starting August 31.

The feature is designed for players sitting on a shelf of physical games who want the convenience of a digital library without buying everything twice, and it reportedly supports thousands of eligible disc titles at launch.

How it works

Players insert a supported disc into their console once to verify ownership. After that one-time check, a digital version of the game is added directly to their Xbox library, so the disc no longer needs to stay in the drive to play.

Why it matters

Once a game is converted, it behaves like any other digital title in a player’s library — eligible for Xbox Play Anywhere entitlements and Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming, and no longer dependent on having the disc on hand to launch it.
