Spoilers for Avengers #1 below. This is a comic-book storyline, not a real-world story.
Marvel’s new Avengers #1, on sale Nov. 4, appears to have pulled the pin on one of Spider-Man’s most hated bargains. According to Collider’s Hannah Hunt, Mephisto’s contracts are now void, which means Peter Parker’s One More Day deal, the one that kept Aunt May alive, is coming due in the worst way.
What Happens in the Issue
Per Collider’s account of the issue (written by Chip Zdarsky, with art by Marco Checchetto and colors by Matthew Wilson), Peter rescues a young woman named Paige, who is carrying a mysterious book that led her to Spider-Man. She tells him her parents made a bargain and that all the deals are over, and that reality is now reclaiming what was promised.
Peter can’t place his own deal at first. Hearing Mephisto’s name brings it back, and with it the realization of exactly who he just saved. The last page cuts to May at FEAST, surrounded by volunteers, while hunters gather outside. Collider says the fate of Peter and Mary Jane’s erased marriage is left unresolved.
How We Got Here
In 2007’s One More Day, Peter and Mary Jane gave up their marriage to Mephisto to save May. The newer setup comes from Doctor Doom. Marvel’s own coverage of Captain America #12 says Doom ruled in One World Under Doom until the Avengers defeated him, then went to Hell to prepare a war on Mephisto. ComicBookMovie.com reported on Oct. 28 that Captain America #16 has Doom revealing that all of Mephisto’s deals are nullified, with Doom now ruling Hell. Collider says Avengers #1’s editorial pages spell out that Doom expelled Mephisto and tore up his contracts. If Doom’s contracts-are-void ruling covers Peter’s deal, Avengers #1 shows what that costs.
The series, which Marvel announced in June, stars Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil and Luke Cage, and follows Avengers: Armageddon. It lands alongside the “Crisis of Faith” crossover as the second big Spider-Man thread we’re tracking. Doom is also the big bad on screen: see the Avengers: Doomsday trailer.
What We Don’t Know
“Death sentence” is Collider’s framing, and the issue ends on a cliffhanger. Nothing in the reporting says May or Peter dies, or that the marriage returns. We’ll update as Marvel shows more of where this is headed.
