Prime Video has set January 2027 premiere dates for Criminal, the series based on Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ comics, and released a first teaser and images, according to Deadline and ComicBook.com. Part One, “Coward,” arrives Jan. 13, with Part Two, “Lawless,” on Jan. 27.

Two Drops, Four Episodes Each

The eight-episode season is split in half. All four episodes of each part land at once, two weeks apart, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. ComicBook.com reports that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck direct the first four episodes and Dee Rees the second four, and that the two parts cover the first 10 issues of the comic, which ran in 2006 and 2007. Prime Video’s own channel labels the video a teaser, so that is what we are calling it.

The Story and the Cast

Charlie Hunnam plays Leo Patterson, who is trying to fight his way out of the world of crime he was raised in. His friend Ricky Lawless (Gus Halper) is desperate to follow his father, a legendary outlaw. Ricky’s older brother Tracy (Luke Evans) returns home from the Army, and their family history comes with him.

Adria Arjona plays Greta, a sharp-tongued car thief from Leo’s past, and Emilia Clarke plays Mallory, Ricky’s girlfriend. Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, John Hawkes and Logan Browning also star. The recurring and guest cast includes Michael Mando, Garrett Hedlund and Patrick J. Adams.

Brubaker and Phillips are among the executive producers, along with Philipp A. Barnett, Boden, Fleck, Jordan Harper, Sarah Carbiener, Rees and Halley Gross. Amazon MGM Studios produces with Basement Gang, Big Indie Pictures, Gowanus Projections and Legendary Television.

Why Comics Fans Should Care

Prime Video already has a deep bench of comic adaptations, and this one is a crime story in a different register from its superhero shows. It is the first time Brubaker and Phillips’ interlocking crime universe has reached the screen, and the split release gives viewers a full chunk of story at a time.
