Frogwares is heading back into Lovecraftian horror this week, but The Sinking City 2 isn’t simply repeating what came before.

The Sinking City 2 officially launches August 18, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, sending players into another flooded city full of monsters, mysteries and things humanity was probably better off not looking at.

This time, however, developer Frogwares is putting considerably more emphasis on the horror part.

The sequel trades much of the first game’s investigation-driven structure for a third-person survival horror experience built around limited resources, exploration and combat.

So if your preferred flavor of Lovecraft involves desperately checking how many shotgun shells you have left, congratulations. Arkham awaits.

What Is The Sinking City 2 About?

Set in 1920s Arkham, New England, The Sinking City 2 takes place as a supernatural flood tears through the city.

Players take control of Calvin Rafferty, whose attempt to save the woman he loves leads him toward the source of the disaster. A failed ritual has trapped her soul in the Dreamlands while other forces have taken possession of her body, leaving Rafferty to navigate a city that is rapidly becoming something significantly worse than flooded.

And naturally, the water isn’t the biggest problem.

Frogwares has filled Arkham with creatures including the Slither, which can animate the dead, along with Deep Ones and other supernatural enemies that can force players to decide whether a fight is actually worth taking.

The Sequel Is Going Much Harder on Survival Horror

This is probably the most important thing to know if you played the original Sinking City.

Frogwares describes The Sinking City 2 as a third-person survival horror game, with players managing their inventory, hunting for supplies, solving puzzles and unlocking shortcuts as they explore Arkham. Combat is more central this time around, while limited resources are designed to make choosing when to fight — or run — matter.

That doesn’t mean Frogwares has completely abandoned the detective mechanics it’s known for.

Investigations still exist, but they’re now optional. Completing them can uncover supplies, safer routes and weapon upgrades rather than blocking progress through the main story.

It’s a smart distinction.

Players who want to tear into every disturbing mystery Arkham has hidden away still can. Anyone primarily interested in surviving the nightmare doesn’t have to solve every case to keep moving.

When Does The Sinking City 2 Release?

The Sinking City 2 releases Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The game will be available on:

The standard edition is listed at $49.99 on the U.S. PlayStation and Xbox stores. A Deluxe Edition is also available, while the Premium Edition includes additional content and 24-hour early access, meaning some players are already wandering around Arkham ahead of the full launch.

On PlayStation 5, the store currently lists the standard game’s unlock for 2:00 a.m. PDT on August 18.

Do You Need to Play The Sinking City First?

Even without returning to exactly the same gameplay formula, The Sinking City 2 clearly carries forward what made Frogwares’ first trip into Lovecraftian horror distinct: an oppressive setting, grotesque creatures and investigations into things that tend to become substantially worse the more you understand them.

This time, survival sits much closer to the center of the experience.

Between a drowned 1920s Arkham, scarce resources, optional investigations and monsters crawling out of places monsters absolutely should not be crawling out of, The Sinking City 2 looks ready to make August a little less comfortable.

The Sinking City 2 launches August 18, 2026, for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
