Why Mulaney fits
On paper, the casting makes sense. Maxwell Smart is a bumbling secret agent whose confidence far outpaces his competence. Mulaney’s dry, verbose, slightly self-serious comic persona could map onto that role neatly. In other words, expect a deadpan take rather than pure slapstick, if it comes together.
His profile is high right now, too. Mulaney has built a devoted following through stand-up specials and a busy hosting run. A big studio comedy would be a natural next step.
The role also comes with big shoes. Don Adams made Maxwell Smart an icon on the original show, and Steve Carell put his own spin on it in 2008. Any new lead has to honor that legacy while finding a fresh angle. Mulaney’s voice is distinctive enough to do exactly that.
