Sebastian Stan Says He Pitched Kevin Feige a Bucky Solo Movie

But in a new profile, Sebastian Stan revealed that a Sebastian Stan Winter Soldier movie is at least something he’s floated to the boss — and the idea he described is a genuinely intriguing left turn for the character.

Speaking to New York Magazine, Stan said he pitched Marvel chief Kevin Feige a small-budget, “Sicario-esque” thriller built around Bucky Barnes. In his version, Bucky recognizes someone connected to his years of HYDRA brainwashing, becomes obsessed with identifying them, and sets out to uncover exactly who they are. It’s less caped crusader and more grounded psychological thriller — the kind of low-key, character-first story the MCU rarely builds around a single hero.

The Sicario comparison is telling. Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 film is a tense, morally murky crime thriller with a small cast and a creeping sense of dread. That’s about as far from a world-ending Avengers crossover as Marvel gets. Applied to Bucky, that framing suggests something intimate and paranoid. It leans into the trauma the character has carried since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, rather than another team-up.

Why Bucky has never led a movie

In fact, it’s easy to forget how long Bucky has been around. Stan first played him in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and turned him into the Winter Soldier in 2014. Since then, he’s carried major arcs through the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and, more recently, the Thunderbolts corner of the MCU. Through all of it, he’s always been a co-lead or an ensemble player — never the name above the title on a feature.

That’s the gap Stan seems most aware of. More than a decade into the role, he said he still sees himself as something of a “sixth man” in the MCU, and pointed out that Bucky has never actually led his own film. That’s true even as one of the franchise’s longest-running characters, currently threaded through the road to Avengers: Secret Wars. Still, coming off an acclaimed stretch of non-Marvel work that reframed him as a serious dramatic actor, it’s not hard to see why he’d want a vehicle that plays to those strengths.

By Stan’s own account, he was “half joking” when he brought it up. Feige’s response, as Stan tells it, was encouraging but noncommittal: “Yeah, that sounds cool.” That’s a long way from a greenlight — it’s the kind of thing a studio head says to a star he likes without committing a single dollar.

It’s worth stating plainly, because these stories tend to get flattened into a misleading headline: no Winter Soldier movie is officially in development. In short, what we have is an actor describing an idea he likes and a studio head politely agreeing it sounds cool. That’s it. The fun here is in the concept — a stripped-down, obsessive Bucky thriller — not in a release date that doesn’t exist.
