Ricpau Studios wants you to know exactly what Helcast is about: punishing gods. The Norse-mythology roguelite, published by Japan’s HYPER REAL, sends players into a pixel-art underworld to fight the gods who’ve taken up residence there, using a physics-based combat system built around catching and merging weapons.
The core hook is the merge system: weapons fly into shifting collection pots during combat, and matching ones combine into stronger combo attacks on the fly. Layered on top is a rune-magic system that lets players reshape their entire weapon loadout mid-run, so a build can pivot from run to run — or fight to fight — depending on what the underworld throws at them.
Ricpau is leaning into a “clever-yet-sinister” storyline for the underworld setting, framing the game’s gods less as untouchable deities and more as bosses who’ve overstayed their welcome. It’s a roguelite premise with a sense of humor about its own mythology, paired with a physics-juggling combat loop that’s built to reward improvisation over memorized patterns.
Helcast is heading to PC via Steam, targeting a Q1 2027 release. Ricpau and HYPER REAL are offering hands-on appointments for the game’s debut demo at Gamescom this week, alongside a streaming trailer and press kit for anyone who can’t make it to Cologne.
