One of the year’s most anticipated genre films has arrived. Na Hong-jin’s Hope is now in US theaters through NEON, and it’s exactly the kind of big-swing horror the distributor loves. If you’ve been waiting for the director’s first film since The Wailing, this is it.
That wait has been long. Na Hong-jin broke out with tense thrillers like The Chaser and The Wailing, and he’s built a reputation for dread-soaked, ambitious filmmaking. Hope is his most expansive project yet.
What Na Hong-jin’s Hope is about
The setup starts small, then goes cosmic. A village police chief and his rookie deputy must protect their community from a mysterious creature. Wildfires have cut off communication, so help isn’t coming. As the story unfolds, the threat reveals itself: the creatures are aliens, and they’re searching for their offspring.
That larger perspective is the whole point. Rather than a simple monster movie, Na Hong-jin reportedly wanted to tell an alien story from a cosmic point of view. So expect awe and terror in equal measure.
A stacked international cast
The ensemble is a real draw. Korean stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Hoyeon lead the film. Alongside them, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander reunite on screen for the first time since 2016’s The Light Between Oceans. Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton round out the cast. In other words, this isn’t a small import — it’s an event.
Why Hope matters
The pedigree speaks for itself. Hope premiered in competition at Cannes 2026, and it reportedly carried the biggest budget of any Korean film to date. NEON is giving it a wide push, too, with a release across roughly 1,500 US theaters. It also adds to NEON’s busy fall slate. Simply put, Na Hong-jin’s Hope is worth seeing on the biggest screen you can find.
