Overwatch’s next Support hero has fangs. Blizzard revealed Doctrine at BlizzCon 2026 — Hero 54, a vampire-inspired Support and an ally of Doomfist — and he’s playable right now via a limited Hero Trial through September 14, ahead of his official debut in Season 5 on October 6.
The Nerd Wire got hands-on time in Anaheim, and Doctrine is exactly the kind of thematically loud hero Overwatch tends to save for a stage like this.
Lifeforce, scepters and bat drones
Doctrine’s kit is built around manipulating lifeforce — Blizzard describes him working through “his scepter, infusions, and bat-like drones,” healing allies and draining enemies. In practice that’s a Support identity spun out of vampire fiction: draining and redistributing life rather than just topping up health bars. The bat-like drones are the visual signature, and the “ally of Doomfist” framing plants him firmly in the game’s Talon-adjacent narrative web. Story-wise, he was imprisoned at Watchpoint: Grímsvötn until Doomfist broke him out — the event Blizzard says “sets the final chapter in motion” for the Reign of Talon.
Blizzard hasn’t published a formal ability breakdown yet. In the trial build, his kit centers on an Infuse resource that supercharges his next ability, drones that boost an ally’s attack speed, and an ultimate, Deliverance, that cuts enemy max health while giving allies overhealth. Numbers and specifics are the kind of thing that shifts between a trial build and live launch, so treat that as the fantasy Blizzard confirmed, not a spec sheet. If you want the real feel, the trial’s live through September 14 — go drain some tanks.

When you can play him
- Now → September 14: limited Hero Trial at BlizzCon and in-game.
- October 6: Season 5 launches and Doctrine joins the roster permanently.
The bigger Overwatch picture
Doctrine headlines a heavy BlizzCon slate for Overwatch, which is deep into its 10-year run. Season 5 concludes The Reign of Talon, the game’s first year-long story arc, and ships with the two biggest balance changes of the year: Sombra moves from Damage into Support, with Hack and Virus replaced by healing-and-debuff tools (associate game director Alec Dawson said the goal was to break the triangle of stealth, lethality and silence), and Roadhog loses guaranteed one-shots — his primary fire becomes a two-round burst and he gains a projectile-absorbing Trash Compactor. The season also adds a new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a remote Icelandic volcano prison that doubles as the setting of Doomfist and Doctrine’s reunion.
Also confirmed: the continuation of Dokiwatch, the delayed Unvaulted Passes arriving at the start of Season 5, an in-game LE SSERAFIM collaboration that’s already live (the band closed the show Sunday night), and a Hero 55 tease before the next Overwatch Spotlight in February 2027, which will carry the roadmap for the year. Everyone who plays a match after the Opening Ceremony gets a Mythic Voucher good for one eligible complete Mythic bundle from Seasons 1–14 — earn and redeem it by October 5.
For now, Doctrine’s the headline: a Support who plays like a vampire, out to try before the weekend’s over. Everything else from the show is in our BlizzCon 2026 hub.
