Heroes of the Storm is getting a new Hero: Xal’atath. Blizzard confirmed it at BlizzCon 2026, with PTR access September 14 and a full release September 28 — the game’s first new hero since Hogger in December 2020.

The Nerd Wire was on the ground in Anaheim, and for a game a lot of players had quietly filed under “maintenance mode,” a brand-new Hero — plus what Blizzard said next — is the real story. It was also the biggest cheer of the Opening Ceremony that wasn’t for a new game.

New content for a game many wrote off

Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard’s crossover MOBA, has run for years on a light update cadence after the studio scaled back active development in late 2018. New original Heroes, in particular, became rare. So Xal’atath — the same Old God-touched figure driving WoW’s current Worldsoul Saga, and the final boss of Midnight: Eclipse — arriving as a fresh, fully released Hero is a real event for the HotS community. Blizzard credited the announcement to “those of you who have continued to carry the torch for HotS over the years.”

She’s a Ranged Assassin whose kit is built around the Dark Heart and rewards extended fights — it escalates the longer a teamfight runs. A pre-purchase Harbinger of BlizzCon bundle adds a BlizzCon-exclusive color variation, a launch skin and a launch mount, and free BlizzCon in-game rewards for Heroes of the Storm (and StarCraft II) are claimable for a limited time.

“There may be even more to come”

Blizzard also added a line worth quoting carefully: “there may be even more to come for Heroes in the future.” The accompanying developer note says Blizzard will continue to release update patches, is looking at additional Heroes in the future, and will use player feedback and engagement to decide where to devote development resources. Reporting from the show says future updates depend on how Xal’atath is received.

That’s a signal, and an encouraging one. But it is not a declaration of a full revival, and we’re not going to frame it as one. Blizzard hinted at more; it did not promise a comeback or a roadmap. The distinction matters, and we’ll hold to exactly what was said.

What’s confirmed

For now: a new Hero, two dates and a door left open. That’s more than HotS players have gotten in a while. Every other announcement from the weekend is in our BlizzCon 2026 hub.
