Netflix and SEGA are getting into business together in a big way. The two companies just announced three new adaptations at once. One of them, somehow, is a live-action Crazy Taxi movie.
What Netflix and SEGA announced
The partnership covers three separate projects. First, there’s a live-action Crazy Taxi movie. Next, Netflix is developing a live-action take on Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming game from RGG Studio (the team behind the Like a Dragon series). Finally, there’s a brand-new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series aimed at younger kids.
For now, none of the three has a release date. These are early-stage announcements, so details are still thin. Still, the scope of the deal is notable on its own.
A live-action Crazy Taxi movie, really
The Crazy Taxi news is the head-turner. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand — the writers behind the recent Naked Gun reboot — are attached to script it. That comedy pedigree is a smart fit, too.
After all, Crazy Taxi is a plotless arcade classic about hurling a cab through traffic to blaring punk rock. There’s no story to adapt, only a vibe. As a result, the writers have almost total freedom to build something original around that chaos. A loose, funny, high-speed comedy could actually work.
Why this Netflix SEGA deal matters
The timing makes sense. SEGA has watched the Sonic films become a genuine box-office franchise, and it clearly wants more of its library on screen. Netflix, meanwhile, keeps leaning into video-game adaptations. This Netflix SEGA slate lets both sides spread their bets across film, prestige-ish live-action, and kids’ animation in one move.
It also fits a broader industry wave, as studios race to turn beloved games into movies and shows — the same trend behind projects like the upcoming live-action Resident Evil. For now, though, temper the hype: there are no dates, no casts, and plenty of runway before any of this reaches a screen.
